About Fat Hen Design

Gertie Fat Hen DesignFat Hen Design is a small, friendly company run by Karen McKay, a self-taught artist influenced by the likes of Beryl Cook and Stanley Spencer. She lives with her husband and scrappy little dog (rescued by Many Tears), Gertie, on the borders of beautiful Rutland and Northamptonshire.

Karen McKay Fat Hen DesignKaren started painting again ten years ago after a long hiatus and established Fat Hen Design in 2008. Her bold and humourous style owes much to her preferred medium of acrylic on paper.

She is helped by her mum - Pippa – who has a keen eye for quality control and a potential customer, and her husband – Mark - who looks after the website and has an equally keen eye for proof reading. Both have been vital in establishing The Welsheepish Collection in over twenty-five shops, galleries and tourist attractions throughout Wales.

Dougal Fat Hen DesignPippa Adams Fat Hen DesignA Welsheepish Christmas – our first collection of Christmas cards - sold out in 2009 and that success was repeated with the Christmas collection for 2010: ‘A Very Scottie Christmas', which was inspired by two very real (and very cheeky) Scottie dogs called Dougal (rescued by STECS) and Bunty.

With the launch of The Kiddie Collection and The Animal Collection, 2011 was our busiest year yet. And 2012 promises to be even more exciting with twenty new designs coming out in February.

We hope you enjoy our cards as much as we enjoy creating them.
